DOUGHNUTS!

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Yummy.  I was in Newport Beach this past weekend and they have this awesome store called Sur la Table.  I saw these doughnut (this is how they have it spelled on pan, kind of cute huh ;) pans.  I had to have and wanted to try.  They were great. Perfect for kids hands and hubby loved so wanted to share. This recipe was on the pan.

What you need...
2 cups of cake flour, sifted
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup buttermilk
2 eggs beaten
2 tablespoons butter, melted

Directions
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Spray Doughnut Pan with nonstick cooking spray and flour.
In a large mixing bowl, sift together cake flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg and salt.  Add buttermilk, eggs, and butter.  Beat until just combined.
Fill holes on 2/3's the way full.
About to large spoon fulls. Don't overfill or they will spill over.

Bake about 7-9 minutes or until the top of the doughnuts spring  back when touched.  Let cool in pan for 4-5 minutes before removing.  Finish doughnuts with chocolate glaze, cinnamon sugar or powered sugar, sprinkles. Makes 12 Doughnuts.

I topped mine with cinnamon and sugar using 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon.  I melted the butter, dipped cooled doughnut in and then dipped in cinnamon sugar mixture.

My Tips
Start with baking less you don't want them dry.  Think about adding something to the mixture like chocolate chips, sprinkles, vanilla, strawberry or almond extract.  I will try something different next time and let you know how they turn out.

Anna Sova Edible (well almost ;) Paint

Tuesday, September 14, 2010

When Lily was born I was looked long and hard for a paint that was eco-friendly.
I found an awesome brand called Anna Sova.
Not only does the paint smell like yummy yogurt it also comes in the best color palate I have found.

These are the colors I picked for her room.  They go perfect together.
Saksberry for the walls and Tahiti for her ceiling with clouds.

Anna Sova paint is made with up to 94% food ingredients.
patented zero VOC, food-based paint is easy to use
applies & protects like standard paint and scrubs easily
made with milk casein (as used in milkshakes)
titanium dioxide (as in powdered donuts)
food grade bamboo cellulose (as in fiber bars)
food emulsifiers, fungicide, bactericide, mildew
Here's a little video I found on their website that explains about non-voc paint.
OHHH...and PS they have really good customer service too!

Sarah Bray Photography in Central Florida

Monday, September 13, 2010

I was home this summer with the girls and had the chance to get their pictures taken by Sarah Bray.  She did an amazing job.  It was about 100 degrees and 100% humidity that day. If people could have seen me jumping up and down, drenched in sweat, all  to get the girls to smile,  they probably would have died laughing.

I wanted to share a couple of the photos plus give Sarah a little shout out because she did such a good job.  If you are ever in Orlando and are looking to get some photos taken look her up!  She is great with kids (having two of her own) and is awesome with the camera.  I can't wait to get my order (finally) placed and get them framed and up on the wall.

PS Check out her blog!  It's eye candy!  She does weddings too!

Key Lime Pie

Sunday, September 12, 2010

We were invited to a fabulous BBQ this weekend and I wanted to bring something.  I have been craving Key Lime for some time now so that's what I brought.  I was so nervous because I have never made one before and I didn't do a test run. The fear of bringing something that your not sure if it is good or not, is not fun. LOL!

Anyways it was Yummy! And Super Easy...So I thought I would share...

What You Need
1 1/2 cups of graham cracker crumbs
1/2 cup of sugar
4 tablespoons of melted butter (1/2 stick)
2 (14-ounce) cans condensed milk
1 cup key lime or regualr limes
2 large whole eggs
Directions
Preheat Oven to 375 degrees F.
Mix graham cracker crumbs, sugar and butter with your hands. Press mixture into a 9 inch round pie dish and bake for 20 minutes.  Works really well if you smooth with a spoon. Remove and Cool.

In a separate bowl, combine condensed milk, lime juice and eggs.  Whisk well.  Fill pie shell.  Bake in oven for 13 minutes.  Chill for 2 hours.

Take out and top with whipped cream.

B's Sweet Chili!

Thursday, September 9, 2010

I cooked this batch of Chili at the beach, meaning to post before we left but just never had a chance.
We are home.  Lily is back in school and is so happy.
It has cooled off here tremendously, reminding me of Fall and hoping it will last.

This recipe is based upon the chili my Mom use to make for us growing up. She is a wonderful cook.  The Key ingredient in here is BEER! You can download recipe HERE!

YOU WILL NEED...
1.25-1.50 LBS. Ground Turkey or Ground Beef
1 30 OZ Can of Kidney Beans
1 30 OZ Can of Tomato Sauce
2-3 Tablespoons of Tomato Paste
2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil
1/4 Teaspoon Red Cayenne Pepper
1/4 General All Purpose Seasoning
1/4 Kosher Sea Salt
1 Can of Beer
1/2-3/4 Cup of Brown Sugar

Directions
Brown the olive oil and seasonings in the pan.
Add in meat.  Cover and brown till cooked through.
Add in your brown sugar and beer. Cook uncovered, for a bit to cook off some of the extra liquid.
Add in (drained and rinsed) kidney beans, tomato sauce, and tomato paste.
Cover and Cook for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally until chili thickens to your liking.

My Side Notes...
I prefer to use canned domestic beer. Not sure why it is just my preference.
I used Turkey bc it has less fat but ground beef is really yummy too.
I cover the meat in the browning stage, it seems to make it cooked more evenly.
With turkey the fat content is so low, you might need to add in about 1/4 cup of water when browning.
Make sure you drain and rinse your kidney beans.
You can tweak the amount of sugar you use to your liking...I prefer mine a little on the sweeter side.

Great toppings for chili are shredded cheese, sour cream, oyster crackers and/or onions.

Do you have a favorite recipe we should try for the fall?  Send it to us and if we like it we will post it ;)
